Guardianship Application
Cats: Personal, Guardianship|Finally turned in my application to be appointed legal guardian for a man I used to work with. I’m now looking forward to background checks, interviews, training sessions, and maybe even court hearings. Yay.
I just consider it practice for adoption, in a weird way.

I don’t get it. Why are you applying to be guardian of a grown man?

I ‘used to work with’ this man as in ‘I supported him as part of my job’. He has a developmental disability (a term which encompasses things like mental retardation, autism, Down Syndrome, and others). The state is looking for a guardian for him because it’s come out that he is not able to make his own decisions in matters pertaining to his support system, and the informal support he has been getting from people has been jeopardizing his health. I can get into more details via email, but this should answer your basic question. Basically it’s been a long time coming, and it is not a decision that is being taken lightly by anyone. Check out the sparse but informative website for the Kansas Guardianship Program if you like, since I’m applying through that program.
