Spiderman 3 Movie Poster

Bottom Line: Go see it in a high-quality theater (at a matinee).

Take 3 for the webbed one carries forward the best traits of the first two films, and for good measure it tosses in the best special effects available. If you liked the other two (and if not–why not??) then you’ll love this installment of the series.

Given the fact that this is reportedly the most expensive movie ever made, it’s no surprise that I give the production value 5/5 stars. But I would have given Waterworld 2.5/5 stars at the time due to how they used the money. Sam Raimi did a great job of balancing all parts of the film, from acting, to music, to special effects talent. Where I wish he’d have spent a little more is on the story, which gets only 3/5 stars. I think the writer Ivan Raimi (Sam’s brother) bit off more than he would chew with this one. Let’s see: Spiderman had to battle Sandman, Venom, Eddie Brock, Jr, the New Goblin…and himself. That’s a lot for any superhero to handle, while at the same time trying to keep/save the girl. The plot hung by a silken thread at several points (get it?), and some interpersonal relationship issues needed more fleshing out. Also, while I liked many aspects of the story, it had the interrupted flow of a serial comic book storyline, instead of a cohesive web that a film of this magnitude deserves.  That kept the enjoyability down to a mere 4.5/5 stars: I actually would have preferred the filmmakers provide a relatively deeper and integrated story, and instead taken out one of the myriad challenges Peter Parker must face in Spiderman 3. Don’t get me wrong - the movie is great the way it is, but it left me wanting a bit more character development (specifically for Harry, Mary Jane, Sandman, and Eddie Brock, Jr.).

Dones’ Rating: ★★★★☆ Good comic book movie with bleeding-edge CGI visuals.
