Okay, there’s a lot wrong with Martin Sargent: he’s foul, he makes fun of people who play along without realizing they’re the butt of the joke, and he’s irreverent to the extreme. There isn’t much he has ever done, be it on the old TechTV or his current Infected podcast, that I would ever recommend to anyone.

At the same time, he’s very funny, and he has a way with words. Plus, his Web Drifter video podcast, recently picked up by my favorite IPTV studio Revision3 for a 20-episode second season, gives him a direction to channel these better traits while leaving little space for the worse ones. I’d stay away from Episode 3, but 1, 2, and the new episode 4 are utterly hilarious. There’s still some foul humor, but it appeals to a much wider audience than his other work. The people he interviews on Web Drifter are out in the public to begin with, so I have much less sympathy for them when Martin mercilessly lampoons them to their faces. I mean come on: a guy who sells the key to eternal life online to raise money to develop a time machine, a guy who regularly communicates with aliens, and the pastor of the Church of Tom Jones — how serious can they really be to begin with? Martin gets the first guy to sing a karaoke version of ‘Forever Young’, participates in communicating with aliens with the second guy, and in his newest episode he helps exorcise demons using Tom Jones music on the streets of Old Sacramento.

Hilarity ensues.

I caution against episode 3 because Mr. Sargent chooses to direct his focus towards some adult site creators in that one, and there’s every indication he will also have some future episodes of that nature. If you have an all-or-nothing tolerance for that sort of subject matter in your media consumption, it’s best to just stay away entirely. Since you can choose which episodes to download or not, it is fairly easy to discern ahead of time what episodes to avoid by going through the website. If you happen to use iTunes, the description for each episode will be a good indication whether you should delete or watch. Enjoy … or don’t.
