I realize my last review was several months ago. I am going to see Avatar in Imax 3D for the second time today. I want to provide an extensive review not only of the film, but also of the 3D experience, so I felt I owed it to my loyal readers to watch it a second time, since the first time I just spent 3 hours with my jaw on the floor. (How’s that for a teaser?)

- Ajax back end
- auto upgrades, plugin installs, etc
- posting from my iPhone

So now you’ll hopefully see more posts from me. I’ve also decided to more fully integrate my Twitter posts into this blog, so expect some one-liners you have otherwise missed if you haven’t been following me at this link.

In other news, I have a load of dishes to finish, a toddler bed to construct, and dinner to plan. So I’ll catch you on the flip-side…

As my online presence expands to include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Amazon wish list, and my shop on CafePress, (along with the occasional Stickam live video), I am finding that this current blog format is not quite cutting it for me. I need a portal that includes all of the above in a reasonably appropriate design. I also need to develop an online portfolio for my soon-to-be-burgeoning freelance web/graphic design career.

I’ll probably stick with WordPress (though I need to upgrade to the latest version), but the template is just not meeting my needs. This being my final semester in my web design program, my final project is probably going to include putting together a new WordPress template. So I’ll probably use that experience (along with the Flash programming experience I’ll have by the end of the semester) to start from scratch.

If you have tried visiting this blog regularly and wonder why I don’t update more often, it’s because I’ve been posting links and notes over there. If you know me personally, become my friend on Facebook, and you’ll see a lot more activity there. If you don’t know me well enough to befriend me on Facebook (I try to keep it to actual acquaintances), here’s another option: I’m also becoming more active on Twitter, so follow me there if you like. While I haven’t touched FriendFeed, my sources tell me that you may be able to aggregate all the stuff that I post everywhere. While that’s a fairly scary thought, I don’t suppose I can stop you.

I went ahead and posted a Twitter widget here and a YouTube widget on my Video page (click the Video tab above). I don’t think anything else will be changing here before, say, May. But who knows. You may want to keep your eyes open.

Check out the rest of the top ten: #2 happens to be another friend’s video of the championship victory in AFH.

In other Jayhawk championship video news, the same friend who shot the #2 video also put together the 2007-2008 “The Show Goes On” highlight video of the Jayhawks’ entire championship season.

I’ve done many things to try to monetize this blog over the years. I’ve tried sponsorships, ads, and PayPal donations. The only thing that’s ever gotten anywhere close to a check is Amazon ads. Everyone shops at Amazon.com eventually, and once in a blue moon, they have gotten to Amazon via a link on my site, netting me a little referral fee.

What do I need money for?

Number one, to break even on my website domain & hosting server fees. I’ll even break it down some for you. Just $3 a month would make a significant dent in my modest bills; $4 per month would pretty much cover costs for my site hosting and all my domain names that I own (I have about four domains currently, with more to come if the ‘fever’ hits me). It’s not much, but after absorbing the costs for a few years now, I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth it.

Second, I wouldn’t mind a little money for my trouble. I know that I would spend more time writing for my blog if I knew it wasn’t just a way for me to rant or share parts of my life with interested readers. I have some creative writing ideas, as well as some graphic design, audio, and video concepts that I would like to put up here. This content would be more likely to make the leap from imagination to reality if I was already making a little, thus had the potential to make a little more with more or different content.

What can my readers do?

For starters, keep coming back like you are. Just knowing I have people reading is a big encouragement.
Join the discussion. Leaving comments makes things more interesting for me & your fellow readers. See the ‘divisive’ post for a great recent example. That kind of dialogue is what I’m looking for; Metamorphilia.com is not an echo chamber…or at least, it shouldn’t be.
Use the Amazon search box on the right sidebar. The top one is my own wish list, mainly for family & friends; use only if you’re looking to buy a present for me. (You’d be surprised how often this actually happens.) The one below my blogroll is a fully-functional, all-inclusive Amazon.com search feature. If you use this box every time you plan on buying something from Amazon.com, I get a little referral fee that will truly make my day. It won’t cost you any more than what you would normally spend at Amazon, and you help support current and future content on this website. Plus I think these search boxes are quite unobtrusive (in a good way), so they shouldn’t detract from the experience of those readers who are not interested in shopping at Amazon or helping me out with expenses.

I thank everyone for their readership of Random Acts of Mind through the years, and I thank you all in advance for helping out during your regular online shopping. You’re my heroes. I welcome any discussion on this topic in the comments section, as always. Tell me what you think, or where I should stick it, or give me other ideas for site monetization (no spam, of course).

My work schedule is about to stabilize to a good point where I can start writing again. Thanks to all those who are still around and check this blog from time to time. I have 2 movie reviews and possibly a video game roundup on their way, as well as hard-hitting coverage (who am I kidding?) of the 2008 presidential campaigns.
