The word “divisive” can be pronounced either way, you twits. This has been the case for many years. As for the individual who cringes when he hears “short-lived” with a short “i”, get a grip. That’s how it’s typically pronounced.

“Inquiry” is can be pronounced two ways as well, with the short “i” more common where I grew up but the long “i”, with the accent on the second syllable, is more common where I live now on the southeast US Atlantic coast.

I am amazed as I read how many people have never heard the word “divisive” pronounced with a short “i” in the second syllable. I think it sounds better with the short “i.” You say tomato, I say tomato…

you’re right by saying mj changed…but who doesn’t?you have to abide by the rules of your time…
please don’t misunderstand me…i respect you view, but we will never know if all these accusations were true…and can you tell me what’s bad in loving animals?i find that this makes the person even more pleasant…mj did change in his music…he left the funk/disco/soul behind to adopt rock for bad and i dont know what for dangerous and history…but his songs were meant to change the world…the earth song and all…

i’m sorry you lost your mj of the 80′s very long ago…i myself preferred this one with his sweet voice and his cute smile, he made his songs appear timeless and so deep….
but i’ve learned to love the other mj too because i’ve seen that they’re pretter much the same because after all, one cannot change completely…

A year and “change” later… now EVERYONE is starting to use Obama’s pronunciation! I still prefer to use the “divysive” (and “derysive”) pronunciation, so it startles me every time I hear “divissive.” Nonetheless, it’s a better influence than Quayle or any other Bush gave us. At least Obama pronounces “nuclear” correctly!
